Dr. Yvonne Hernandez-Kapila is a clinician-scientist with over 30 years of experience advancing oral disease mechanisms. Trained at Stanford University (B.A.) and UCSF (D.D.S., Ph.D., Periodontology Residency, Postdoctoral Scholar), she has held leadership positions including Full Professor at the University of Michigan and Director of Global Health Initiatives, Chair of Periodontology at UCSF as R. Earl Robinson Distinguished Professor, and currently at UCLA as Professor, Associate Dean of Research and holder of the Felix and Mildred Yip Endowed Chair in Dentistry.
Her discoveries on cellular and molecular mechanisms governing periodontal disease and oral cancer pathogenesis have generated more than 170 publications. She has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health for over 30 years and currently directs four NIH grants (U54, two R01s and K12) mapping the human virome and microbiome across the oral-gut-brain axis and oral host-microbe interactions. Dr. Hernandez-Kapila is an AAAS Fellow and Chair of Section R.
