Sedation for dental procedures has become more common, with many patients requesting sedation for dental treatment. Advances in medicine have allowed patients to live longer both with various systemic diseases. This course reviews the levels of sedation and the complex physiologic interactions that may occur for patients with cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, hepatic, endocrine, metabolic, and hematologic disorders. Participants will have a greater understanding of evaluating and developing a sedation plan for these medically complex (and not so complex) patients.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will be able to describe the difference in the physiologic responses and level of consciousness associated with minimal, moderate, and deep sedation.
Participants will distinguish between healthy patients and medically complex patients and the various impacts systemic disease can have on delivery of safe sedation.
Participants will be better able to assess the level of complexity of systemic disease and understand its impact on sedation and anesthesia plans.
